Abstract:
Vines of three grape cultivars, Villaneuva, Alphonse Lavallee, and Italia, were selected and divided into two groups of 30. One group of each cultivar was sprayed with 4000 ppm ethephon, another left untreated.
Following treatment, bud break and fruitfulness were evaluated on canes with 1 to 10 nodes.
Bud break at the distal node was not affected by ethephon treatment in any cultivar, but was stimulated in buds adjacent to the distal bud.
Ethephon appeared to reduce apical dominance.
Fruitfulness was not affected by ethephon treatment, but treated vines produced more racemes per cane because of higher bud break.
