Abstract:
Insufficient winter chilling of deciduous fruits is often a problem in Taiwan.
The progress of Kyoho grape (Vitis vinifera X V. labrusca) bud opening was separated into 6 stages to facilitate evaluation of the effect of rest-breaking treatments.
Cyanamide at 1% aqueous solution (a.i.) was effective and comparable to ethyl ene chlorohydrin application in inducing bud opening on dormant cuttings.
The percentage of buds that broke in two separate experiments with vegetative single bud cuttings of different ages were 58% and 27%, vs. 3.3% and 0%, respectively, for the control.
Bud burst started 21 days after application of cyanamide (2.5%) during January to field-grown Kyoho vines.
The optimum rates for application before and after mid-February to Golden Muscat vines were 4% and 2.5%, respectively.
Application of 2.45% during late August, immediately after the normal harvest season induced defoliation of Golden Muscat vines within six days and induced a second flush of shoot growth.
This permit the harvesting of two crops per year.
