ISHS Acta Horticulturae 199: II International Workshop on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics

EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT METHODS TO IMPROVE BUDBREAK IN TROPICAL VINEYARDS

Authors:   R. Simancas, P. Corzo, E. Bracho
Abstract:
The effects on bud break and fruit yield of ethephon, two levels (5 and 7.5%) of 'Alzodef' (50% cyanamide), and two types of bending of canes were compared in two table grape varieties, Italia and Alphonse Lavallee. In Italia, bud break was significantly increased by 'Alzodef' at 7.5% plus bending of canes with 10 to 12 buds at the wire. The highest fruit yield (16.0 kg per vine) was obtained with ethephon (5000 ppm), followed by Alzodef (7.5%) plus bending. Bending alone significantly increased budbreak (41.4%) and fruit yield (12.6 kg/plant). None of the treatments had significant effects on Alphonse Lavallee in which budbreak was high (60%) without treatment.
