SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF PEACH VARIETIES GROWN IN THE HIGHLANDS OF NORTHERN THAILAND

Author:   S. Subhadrabandhu
Abstract:
A study of some characteristics of eighteen introduced peach varieties was conduct at Angkhang Station, Chiangmai Province during the 1982 – 1983 season. Twelve varieties were introduced from Florida, USA (Flordabelle, Flordared, Flordasun, Earligrande, Flordagem, Flordagold, Flordaking, Flordaprince, Maravilha, San Pedro, Florda # 2–4 and Florda # 5–18), four from Hawaii, USA (P-49, P-101, P-105 and P-112). Swellen Grabrel was introduced from Israel and Ying Ku from the Republic of China (Taiwan). These introductions were compared to two local varieties, AngKhang Red and AngKhang White. All varieties were grown on the AngKhang White rootstock. Vegetative characteristics measured in this study were current season shoot length, length and width of mature leaf leaf dry weight, and leaf area. Reproductive characteristics were length and width of fruit, fruit weight, fruit volume, percent soluble solids and titratable acid of the flesh, stone weight, and stone volume. These characteristics were found to differ significantly among the varie ties studied. The data may be used as a guideline in breeding and selection of suitable peach cultivars for the hill areas of northern Thailand.
