Abstract:
The second workshop of the ISHS Working Group on Temperate Zone Fruits in the Tropics and Subtropics was held at Maracai, Venezuela, December 9–14, 1985. This volume contains manuscripts and abstracts of papers presented at the workshop, as well as several papers contributed by persons who were unable to attend.
The purposes of the Working Group are discussed in the first paper and need not be repeated here.
Future workshops and symposia are being planned with the intention of meeting at each Congress of the ISHS and on even years between Congresses.
We are indebted to many organizations and individuals for making this workshop possible.
First and foremost, we thank the Fundacion Servicio para el Agricultor (FUSAGRI) for providing excellent facilities for the meeting at its research Station at Cagua, near Maracai, as well as their hospitality in hosting delegates at their Centro de Desarrollo Viticola Tropical, near Maracaibo, on the closing day of the workshop.
Here they provided facilities for an open house and luncheon.
We are grateful to many others for financial and moral support.
Frutera Industrial, C.A. (FRICA) provided both financial support and many samples of their refreshing fruit drinks.
The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations provided financial support through the ISHS to cover part of the travel expenses of resource persons from Australia, The Republic of China, Thailand, Israel, and Mexico.
The Fondo de Desarrollo Fruticola (FONDEFRU) and the Federacion Nacional de Fruticultores assisted in planning the program, and the Universidad del Zulia provided bus transportation between hotels in Maracaibo and the Centro Viticola.
Additional sources of support were: the Universidad Central de Venezuela; Corporation de Desarrollo de la Region Zuliana (CORPO-ZULIA); Asociation de Viticultores del Estado Zulia (AVEZ); Cooperativa de Viticultores del Distrito Mara (COVIMARA); Plantagro; Polimeros del Lago (POLILAGO); and the Asociacion de Industrias Procesadoras de Citricas (ASOINPROCI).
Many individuals assisted in making the workshop a success.
At the risk of omitting the names of many individuals to whom we are indebted, we would especially like to thank Ing.
Nelson Mendoza J., Gerente General of FONDEFRU, Ing.
Euro A. Bracho M., Director, FUSAGRI CORPOZULIA, Ing.
Jose F. Moyejas F. of FRICA, who served as liaison with that organization, Ing.
Angel Flores of FUSAGRI, who took responsibility for much of the scheduling, Raul Ramirez M. of Agricolonial C.A., who assisted with the tour of peach farms near Colonia Tovar, and Ing.
Gustavo Bastidas R., Presidente of the Federacion Nacional de Fruticultores.
Delegates from the temperate zone were impressed with the experiments in progress in Venezuela and with the ability of Venezuelan growers to manipulate the growth of peaches and grapes to obtain several crops a year with little or no chilling.
The exchange of information during the workshop was beneficial to all involved and we are looking forward to the next such workshop in Thailand in December in 1988. Anyone wishing information on the working group or meetings thereof may obtain information by writing to one of us.
