ISHS Acta Horticulturae 198: Symposium on the Timing of Field Production of Vegetables

IMPROVING PARSLEY STANDS THROUGH SEED PRIMING AND IMPROVED CULTURAL PRACTICES

Authors:   R.L. Hassell, D.W. Kretchman
Abstract:
Current year seed of 'Forest Green' parsley (Petroselinum hortense) received several pre-plant treatments. In addition to seeding with the standard narrow shoe, a 5-cm wide scatter shoe was also evaluated. Yields were significantly increased in each of the 3 years of this study by using the scatter shoe on the seeder.

Soaking the seed in aerated water for 72 hours to remove an inhibitor in the seed coat and seed priming with PEG 6000 also increased yields. Pregerminating the seed plus fluid-drilling resulted in decreased yields.
