ISHS Acta Horticulturae 198: Symposium on the Timing of Field Production of Vegetables

AN ANALYSIS OF THE DYNAMICS OF HIGH-SPEED VEGETABLE TRANSPLANTING

Authors:   R.D. Munilla, L.N. Shaw
Abstract:
This study investigates the dynamics of transferring, and planting a soil block seedling. It relates these concepts to the design of a mechanism which can accept a high speed queue of seedlings and maintain positive control of their orientation throughout the transplanting operation. It also discusses the design and testing of one such mechanism, which carries out all the functions of punching the hole, withdrawing, and depositing the transplants at zero relative velocity. This concept represents a departure from all previously reported transplanter research in which the velocity match-up has been instantaneous. Test results indicate that a commercial growing flat can be incorporated into the system without any modifications. The seedlings are handled precisely and with minimum trauma at speeds which double those of semi-automatic machines.
