ISHS Acta Horticulturae 198: Symposium on the Timing of Field Production of Vegetables

RATIONALIZING LEEK CULTURE BY: THE PLUG-SPEEDLING SYSTEM

Authors:   F. Benoit, N. Ceustermans
Abstract:
The plug-speedling system shortens the raising period of leek seedlings with at least 2 months. Moreover, planting out can be fully mechanised whereas till now this represented the main bottleneck in the labor requirement of leek growing.

Last but not least the growing period can be shortened and well graded plants were already dug 6 months after sowing. The raising period has to be limited to a maximum of 2 months in the spring season (March 22 till May 22) in order not to cause a growth stress after planting out too old seedlings.

The length-growth of the white shaft of the plug plants was limited to the advantage of its diagonal development.

It was postulated that planting holes of 20 cm depth were not suited and that deeper holes and or earthing up could improve the shaft length.
