ISHS Acta Horticulturae 198: Symposium on the Timing of Field Production of Vegetables

SOME EFFECTS OF SEED-BED CONDITIONS ON SEEDLING ESTABLISHMENT FROM FLUID DRILLED PRE-GERMINATED SEED

Author:   W.E. Finch-Savage
Abstract:
The benefits of establishing crops from fluid-drilled pre-germinated seeds have been reported from a large number of isolated experiments. However, there has been no co-ordinated work to show how fluid-drilled pre-germinated seeds are affected by different field environments. In this paper results are presented which describe seedling emergence from pre-germinated and natural dry seeds in a wide range of seed-bed conditions. The predictability of establishment from pre-germinated seed is discussed and compared to that from natural seed.
