THE INTRODUCTION OF HEAT TOLERANCE FOR FLOWERING FROM JAPANESE SUMMER-FLOWERING CHRYSANTHEMUMS INTO YEAR-ROUND CHRYSANTHEMUMS

Abstract:
The delay of flowering by high temperatures is a serious problem in the summer production of year-round chrysanthemums in Japan. It was found that the heat delay of Japanese summer-flowering chrysanthemums was much smaller than that of year-round types. Cross-breeding between summer-flowering chrysanthemums and year-round types was carried out and some seedlings with the following benefits were obtained. First, these selected seedling clones flowered normally and regularly as scheduled even under high temperature conditions. Secondly, they had a shorter reaction period in short days than year-round chrysanthemums. Thirdly, they were able to flower under longer daylengths than are required for year-round chrysanthemums.

The results showed that Japanese summer-flowering chrysanthemums may be useful for the breeding of year-round chrysanthemums, especially for the introduction of heat tolerance for flowering.
