ISHS Acta Horticulturae 196: Symposium on Tropical and Subtropical Fruit Breeding

PRACTICE OF PINEAPPLE BREEDING

Author:   C. Cabot
Abstract:
In 1978, IRFA initiated a program in the Ivory Coast for improvement of pineapple varieties. The main purpose concerns the fruit quality for exportation (fresh and canned).

Crossings between nine clones of each variety of Smooth Cayenne and Perolera produce 30000 hybrids per annum. Based on the heritability of characters, a selection design is presented in order to prevent the high influence of environmental factors. New hybrid varieties will be available for growers after 15 years.
