EFFECT OF FUMIGATION AND ROOTSTOCK ON GROWTH OF MAIDEN PRUNE TREES PLANTED IN LAND PREVIOUSLY CROPPED WITH PRUNES

Authors:   D.K. Strydom, G.E. Honeyborne
Abstract:
A study was made of the effect of localized preplant methyl bromide and ethylene dibromide soil fumigation on growth of maiden Prune d'Agen trees in four commercial prune replant situations. On two sites methyl bromide but not ethylene dibromide fumigation improved growth of the maiden trees considerably. The prune replant problem does not seem to be rootstock specific because trees on both Marianna and peach rootstocks grew much better following fumigation on a site which had previously supported Prune d'Agen on peach rootstock.
