Abstract:
Very little research is done in South Africa on the cultivation or ennoblement of the more than a thousand species of edible wild plants indigenous to Southern Africa.
The exception is the marula (Sclerocarya birrea) on which the University of Pretoria has been doing research for the ennoblement thereof since 1982.
The following plants are also discussed briefly, viz:-
Ricinodendron rautanenii, Bequaertiodendron magalismontanum, Sterculia alexandri, Eugenia albanensis, Tylosema esculentum, Gethyllis sp., Cyanella hyacinthoides, Chamarea capensis and Vigna lobatifolia.
Universities should be encouraged to undertake this type of research.
