BREEDING OBJECTIVES AND ACHIEVEMENTS FOR STONE FRUITS FOR SOUTH AFRICA |

| Abstract:
Up to the early 1960's Kakamas was almost exclusively grown as a canning peach cultivar. The release of the clingstone type Walgant in 1958 and of Oom Sarel, Malherbe, Black and Neethling in 1961 extended the canning season by nine weeks. Breeding for improved tree shape and size, wider adaptability and characteristics that will ensure economic production of the crop, will further enhance these remarkable achievements. The release of three drying peach cultivars Bokkeveld, Waveren and Hantam during 1984, further extended the list of locally bred cultivars for processing. Although apricot breeding was less successful, two cultivars for processing were released viz. Peeka in 1966 and Super Gold recently. In both crops the main emphasis is on dual purpose cultivars and on extending the harvesting season at both ends with relatively short time intervals in between. Other breeding objectives are outlined. | |
