KEEPING QUALITY AND SHELF LIFE OF BON CHRETIEN PEARS AS AFFECTED BY CALCIUM, ALAR AND SEMPERFRESH

Authors:   H.J. van Zyl, J.W. Wagner
Abstract:
For both the fresh and the canning market the general practice is to store Bon Chretien pears for two months or even longer prior to being put on the market or canned. The storage and shelf life of Bon Chretien pears varies from year to year and from area to area.

In two consecutive years very little effect could be obtained by spraying with either Ca(NO3)2 or CaCl2. Daminozide (Alar) at a concentration of 1 000 and 2 000 mg/kg sprayed three weeks prior to harvest, improved shelf life. Ripening and senescent breakdown of fruit dipped in a 1.5% solution of Semperfresh prior to cold storage, was retarded considerably. Problems were, however, experienced with colour development of the treated fruit, after application of Semperfresh.
