EFFECT OF CUTTING SEED TUBERS ON POTATO PRODUCTION

Authors:   B.J. Pieterse, F.I. du Plooy, P.S. Hammes
Abstract:
The appearance, growth vigour and yield of crops grown from half and quarter seed pieces of potatoes (100, 150 and 200g) did not differ significantly from that of crops grown from whole seed tubers of the same mass. Cutting as such had no adverse effect on the production capability of a seed tuber. The yield of a crop grown from half seed pieces (60, 105 and 150g) was also not significantly different from that of a crop grown from whole seed tubers (120, 210 or 300g) in spite of the lower seed rates and stem populations of the seed pieces. The productivity of cut seed tubers is ascribed to more efficiently utilization of accumulated reserves in the seed tubers, and to higher production per stem by the established stem population.
