Abstract:
Pear canker diseases did not consistently express characteristic symptoms on several indicator hosts during the course of several experiments at the Angers Fruit Breeding Experiment Station.
Four inocula were used : the first one induced blister canker symptoms on the cv. "Williams", the second induced rough bark symptoms on cv. "Doyenné du Comice" and the other two induced symptoms on Pyrus A20. Each of the four inocula were side grafted to the following pear virus indicators : "Williams", "Doyenné du Comice", "Pyrus A20", "Beurré Herdy", "Pyrus LA 62", "Légipont" and "Winter Nellis". The results of the initial inoculation revealed that each inoculum source induced symptoms only on certain of the indicators that were used.
Several successive inoculations did not result in additional infected plants or modify the original disease syndrome.
Symptoms were produced occasionally when a symptomless indicator that had originally been inoculated with one inoculum source was challenge-inoculated with one of the other inocula.
It is apparent from the results of the tests reported here that it is difficult to detect viral induced bark disorders in pear and to determine whether there is a common etiology among the various bark disorders observed.
