Abstract:
A decline of sour cherry cv.
Maraska trees was observed in the Mediterranean region of south-west Yugoslavia many years ago.
The diseased trees did not express obvious leaf symptoms, but bark necrosis, sometimes entering the xylem, and stem pitting and qummosis were frequently found.
The decline rapidly progressed and trees finally died within a couple of years.
In order to identify the causal agent of the decline, indexing on woody indicators and mechanical transmissions to herbaceous plants were performed, ELISA tests were made in samples from dormant and sprouted buds, bark and leaves of the rootstock and the scions.
Summarizing the results of transmission to herbaceous and woody indicators as well as ELISA in all of the cases the following viruses were found : Prunus necrotic ring spot virus, cherry leaf roll virus and apple chlorotic leaf spot virus.
Therefore, it may be proposed that the decline is due to the synergistic action of these three viruses.
Result proved that in case of such a complex infection ELISA was the most reliable method to detect the causal agent.
