Abstract:
Different types of resistance to plum pox virus (PPV) were established in plum varieties and hybrids.
One hybrid reacted with gummosis and necrosis around the grafted chips and with tip necrosis after top grafting and the inoculated trees remained virus-free.
Not every PPV isolate caused this hypersensitive reaction which was classified as qualitative resistance.
Compared with highly sensitive plum varieties a group of further varieties showed mild symptoms, low virus concentrations, and infection was not completely systemic.
This is regarded as quantitative resistance.
PPV isolates varied in their virulence to plum and this is an important variable to be considered in assessing resistance.
