Abstract:
In order to determine the optimal conditions of plum pox virus (PPV) detection, 40 samples per infected tree were collected from well-defined positions, in 1984 and 1985, on 4 apricot trees and 4 peach trees, at different growing stages; they were tested by applying the ELISA technique.
From peach trees, detection is reliable in bark of 1- or 2- year old twigs, or in young leaves, Detection is also possible in flowers, but the percentage of positive responses is lower.
From apricot trees, detection is possible in very young shoots, fruits or leaves at the end of the summer.
Tests done with flowers, leaves or bark are less efficient.
The possibility of PPV detection in recently contaminated trees is discussed.
