Abstract:
In the north-east part of Yugoslavia close to Hungarian border a sudden outbreak of Sharka virus (plum pox virus, PPV) was noticed in summer of 1984. Fruits of several peach varietes displayed obvious symptoms of Sharka consisting of rings and mottling spread over the whole surface of fruits.
The identity of PPV was proved by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The virus was detected in dormant buds, leaves and fruits with symptoms.
It seems that the isolate from peach might be a new strain of PPV, different from Yugoslavia plum strains.
To our knowledge this is the first occurrence of naturally infected peach trees in Yugoslavia.
