Abstract:
A sanitary selection of stone and pome fruits chosen for the completion of chilling requirements in a range of altitude from 300 to 1500 meters, was carried out through the indexing regulations of INRACTIFL. Candidate trees were obtained from Florida or South Africa.
All the positive trees on indexing were discarded, and a foundation block of 30 selections of peaches and 2 selections of apples was established on virus free rootstocks.
The Island of Reunion located at 21° latitude in the Southern hemisphere has been kept so far, free of the infectious diseases originated from Europe or America, and transmitted by arthropods or nematodes (Sharka, Peach mosaic, Phony peach, Nepoviruses, Proliferation, etc.), as well as free of bacterial diseases.
This material was propagated in registered nurseries and is presently established in private orchards.
Yields of 16 T/ha in the 2nd year after plantation, or 25 T/ha in the 5th year and 30 T/ha in the 6th year are not uncommon.
