Abstract:
In 1976, two viruses, CLSV and NRSV, were experimentally inoculated in Canino grown on two seedling rootstocks (A 1236 cv.
Manicot and A 843 very susceptible to CLSV). The trees were fertilized at two different nitrogen levels from 1976 to 1980.
The CLSV inoculated trees show a smaller trunk girth, an earlier fruit maturity, and a lower harvest weight than the NRSV or the control trees, during the last five years.
Most of the Canino scions budded on A 843 died because of incompatibility at the graft union due to CLSV in Canino.
The NRSV inoculated trees exhibited a marked decrease in yield compared to the control.
The nitrogen level influenced the yield but not the tree growth.
Some of the control trees became infected by CLSV or NRSV during the 7 years of the experiment.
