ISHS Acta Horticulturae 192: VIII International Symposium on Apricot Culture and Decline

COMPARISON OF NEW AND OLD APRICOT ROOTSTOCKS

Authors:   S. Sansavini, P. Montevecchi
Abstract:
Eight rootstocks were tested over an eight-year period on cv. Reale d'Imola in the Bologna (Italy) plain. A marked grafting incompatibility with a tree mortality rate of 31% was evidenced by peach A VI, while several myrobalans (B and 1/6) and Damas 1869 had lower rates. Maximum tree growth and yield were shown by myrobalan hybrid GF 31, prune GF 43 and Italian myrobalan S 2/5. These results confirm that, in addition to a favourable yield-to-trunk area ratio, the apricot also requires good tree development, a factor which appears necessary to satisfactory fruit size and quality.
