Abstract:
In the last 40 years apricot research has obtained outstanding results in scientific and practical fields.
If we try to look into the future we may say that "The people need more apricots" and that "The apricot needs more fundamental, applied and developmental research".
There is a market for more apricots to be used for fresh consumption or for the food industry.
To use this possibility we need to improve the organization of apricot research on regional, interregional, national or international levels, based on an interdisciplinary approach of the problems.
There is a need for the establishment of centres for apricot genetic resources to improve collection, conservation and the exchange of material.
This exchange should be based on lists of descriptions of cultivars giving computerised information of the most important characteristics.
This information is needed for programmes focused on breeding for resistance to various important diseases and to other factors influencing fruit quality, fresh consumption, storage, drying and processing for different purposes in the food industry.
