QUALITY CONTROL OF GROWING HOUSE TOMATOES FOR EXPORT |

| Abstract:
During 1980/1981 season, a full scale quality control system was operated to control the outgoing quality of tomatoes grown in growing houses, for export. The system includes representative sampling according to a predetermined sampling program, quality evaluation and merit points rating systems to determinate the quality level and incentives to the growers (2,3). The main objective of the quality control system is to maintain central control over the outgoing product, to get uniform and better quality. The system must constantly reevaluated, using accumulated data. The system must be able to resist outside influence of those who want to bypass its control. The quality criteria must conform to the export regulations but be flexible enough to be modified according to varying production and marketing factors. A study made in Ben Gurion University (1) has shown the influence of quality factors on the market price of exported tomatoes. Additional study has shown the necessity of effective control system to motivate the growers to produce quality tomatoes. | |
