ISHS Acta Horticulturae 191: Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Solanacea in Mild Winter Climates

THE CHOICE OF TOMATO CULTIVARS FOR GREENHOUSE PRODUCTION IN THE PLAIN OF FARO

Authors:   J. Costa, J. Monteiro
Abstract:
The importance of using the correct cultivars in protected cultivation and the need of knowing their performance under specific conditions is well known.

This paper presents five trials with several tomato cultivars for fresh market. Yield, fruit characteristics and plant behaviour is discussed.

Plants were grown in unheated plastic greenhouses during 3 seasons with at least, 4 replications at the Experimental Station of Patacão.

In one of those experiments the production of pollen, for the various cultivars has also been observed in addition to the usual measurements.

Evidences of the superiority of cultivar Féria, in the Autumn/Winter season, were shown as well as the constancy of cultivar Marca in the best yielding group.

The nematode tolerance of the cultivars revested a bigger importance in the Spring season than in the Autumn/Winter one.
