ISHS Acta Horticulturae 191: Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Solanacea in Mild Winter Climates

PEPPER PRODUCTION UNDER A SIMPLE PROTECTING STRUCTURE DURING WINTER SEASON IN THE NORTH OF DELTA, EGYPT

Author:   F. El-Aidy
Abstract:
The favourable climatic conditions in Egypt allow the use of simple and cheap plastic tunnels for winter pepper production, they have a solid iron hoops and clad with 0.10 mm PE film during the period of November to March. The dimentions of this type were 5 X 50 X 2 m. Overall cost of structure was varied from 0.95 to 1.02 US $/m2 and with annual cost 0.26 – 0.37 US $/m2 according to the type of film plastic.

Six sweet pepper varieties were cultivated under unheated plastic tunnels during winter seasons of 1983/84 and 1984/85.

The best results were obtained from Esterel variety, in both early (1.79 kg/m2) and total yield (6.18 kg/m2), with good average fruit weight (87 g).
