ISHS Acta Horticulturae 191: Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Solanacea in Mild Winter Climates

DIFFICULTIES IN THE FRUIT SETTING OF TOMATOES IN COLD GREENHOUSES IN WINTER IN SUBTROPICAL CLIMATES, AND PARTHENOCARPY AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Author:   W. Loots
Abstract:
Large acreages of fresh-market tomatoes are grown every year in mainly plastic greenhouses in the countries around the Mediterrean, in Australia, South Africa, Chili etc.

Frequently many problems occur with the fruit setting. The most common reasons for lack of fruictification are:

  1. Lack of vibration of the flowers.
  2. High relative humidity in the greenhouse.
  3. Too heavy vegetative growth.
  4. Low temperatures.
  5. Variety differences.
