ISHS Acta Horticulturae 191: Symposium on Protected Cultivation of Solanacea in Mild Winter Climates

INFLUENCE OF LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE GREENHOUSE PRODUCTION OF SOLANACEA PLANTS IN MILD WINTER AREAS

Authors:   R. TESI, F. TOGNONI
Abstract:
Cold plastic houses for winter production are very common in the Mediterranean regions or regions with mild climate, and where solanaceous plants are prevalently grown; tomato, pepper and egg-plants in order.

It is a matter of fact that in these conditions yield is correlated with solar radiation and night temperature, and though most greenhouses are not equipped with air conditioning therefore the techniques which may "overcome" the dangerous effect of the cold night temperature are very important.

Many studies on Solanaceous production in a cold greenhouse are done in quite different climatic conditions from Mediterranean regions, where the night temperature is frequently below 10°C although the winter temperature is not very severe.

The effect of low temperature on the different growth phases and the techniques which may be used to overcome low temperature effect are reported.
