VIRUS DISEASES OF TOMATO IN ETHIOPIA |

| Abstract:
This paper summarizes the data obtained by the SPL researchers since 1977. Virus infestations of tomato crops were recorded at Awassa, Sodo, and Sholo (Sidamo province), Tendaho (Welo), Amihara (Harerge), Ambo, Guder, Nazret, Tibilla, and Zway (Shewa). Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) was identified using indicator host test, electron microscopy, and serological techniques. Infestations varied from 12–15% in Sidamo to 40% and 100% in Welo and Harerge, respectively. Besides TMV, potato virus X was also identified in tomato samples from Awassa. The samples from Nazret were probably infected with tomato spotted wilt and tomato aspermy viruses. In 1984 the attempts were done to characterize virus strains naturally infecting tomato crops. Thus, two isolates of tomato mosaic virus (tobamovirus) were recovered from tomato samples from Guder. They differ in the symptoms produced in field tomatoes and in the severity of reaction in Capsicum annuum and Nicotiana tabacum cultivars used as indicators. Further studies of the most aggressive virus strains are in progress. | |
