ISHS Acta Horticulturae 190: Symposium on Tomato Production on Arid Land

THE PERFORMANCE OF SEVEN PASTE TOMATO VARIETIES AT THE ARID NORTHERN REGION OF THE SUDAN

Author:   A. Nourai
Abstract:
A study was conducted for three consecutive seasons at Hudeiba Research Station, Northern Region, Sudan to evaluate the performance of seven paste tomato varieties and to examine their susceptibility to the incidence of tomato leaf curl disease. The varieties tested were San Marzano, Red Top, Chico, Chico III, Roma, Roma VF and Renovel VFR.

Results indicated that the overall mean marketable yield of paste tomato varieties for the three seasons varied from 2.2 to 22.3 tons/ha. The varieties San Marzano, Red Top, Chico, Roma and Renovel VFR gave the highest marketable yield of 22.3,21.3,21.5,19.7 and 18.7 tons/ha, respectively. The lowest marketable yield of 2.2 tons/ha was recorded by the variety Roma VF.

Seasonal variations in tomato yield were substantial. The overall mean markerable yields of 43.8, 10.8 and 2.4 tons/ha were obtained in 1981/82, 1982/83 and 1983/84 seasons, respectively. The marked reductions in tomato yields observed in the two latter seasons were mainly due to the high incidence of tomato leaf curl disease.
