TOMATO VARIETY EVALUATION & SELECTION FOR SALT TOLERANCE

Authors:   M.H. MAHMOUD, A.S. El-Beltagy, R.M. Helal, M.A. Maksoud
Abstract:
A Pot experiment was undertaken to evaluate six tomato cultivars, i.e. Edkawy, Ace, UC 82, Strain B, VF 145-B 78 and E 6203, for salt tolerance.

Seeds were shown in a Jiffy pots (≠≠ 7) and transplanted to a sand culture in a greenhouse (20/10°C day and night temperature). Seedlings were irrigated with saline water (0, 2500, 5000, 7500 and 10000 ppm of NaCl/CaCl2, 3:1 ratio), using stepwise increase in salt conc. technique A split plot design with three replicates was adopted.

Date showed an increase in fruit T.S.S. of all tested cultivars with the increasing of salinity level

The response of various genotypes to the increase in salt concentration varied to a great extent. Edkawy, as compared with the other cultivars, gave the lowest decrement in dry weight/plant, total yield/plant and number of clusters/ plant. Meanwhile, E 6203 gave the highest decrement with the increase in salt concentration.

Results indicated that Edkawy cultivar, which was grown in a saline area in Egypt, may be considered as one of the salinity tolerant genotypes.
