ISHS Acta Horticulturae 190: Symposium on Tomato Production on Arid Land

INVESTIGATION OF TOMATO MALE STERILE LINES IN RELATION TO HYBRID SEEDPRODUCTION

Authors:   B. Atanassova, H. Georgiev
Abstract:
The most effective method for cheaper and easier tomato seedproduction is the use of male sterile female lines. In view of assessing the most suitable type of sterility for use in the practice lines with sterility controlled by the genes ms-1035, ms-1526, ms-33, ps-2 and longistylic lines were studied in regard to the following characters:

- environmental effect on the expression of sterility; -percent of selfpollination; - seedproduction; - existing possibilities for use in combination with marker genes, other types of sterility or with certain flower morphology characteristics permitting easy emasculation; - choosing the most effective method for fast and successful transfer of sterility to lines with high combining ability.
