ISHS Acta Horticulturae 190: Symposium on Tomato Production on Arid Land

THE INFLUENCE OF LEAF POSITION AND AGE UPON THE PRODUCTION OF STRESS ETHYLENE IN TOMATOES

Authors:   A.F. Abou Hadid, A.S. El-Beltagy, A.R. Smith, M.A. Hall
Abstract:
It is demonstrated that, in tomato, leaf age is a major determinant in the response to stress in terms of ethylene biosynthesis. Whereas young leaves produce as much or more ethylene than older leaves under non-stressed conditions, the imposition of drought leads to depression of ethylene biosynthesis in younger leaves but an increase in older leaves.
