TOMATO FRUIT GROWTH PATTERN AND ENDOGENOUS ETHYLENE UNDER NORMAL AND STRESS CONDITIONS. *

Authors:   . , Z.A. El-S, A.S. El-Beltagy, P.J.A.L. de Lint
Abstract:
Tomato fruit growth patterns based on fresh and dry weight were followed up for 40 days (seven harvest) under normal and stress conditions either continuous 500 ppm NaCl and high relative humidity or in cycles, 1500 ppm, 3000 ppm NaCl, drought and waterlogging for 5 days followed by 2 days relief.

An increase in growth rate for all treatments over the control during the first three harvests, except for waterlogging, was followed by a general decrease. Net decrement (%) in dry weight was higher for drought followed by 1500 ppm NaCl, waterlogging, 500 ppm NaCl, 3000 ppm NaCl and high relative humidity, respectively.

In addition, endogenous ethylene level in the fruits showed an increase, in the early stages for 500, and 1500 ppm NaCl, waterlogging and high relative humidity, while in the later stages, all treatments, endogenous ethylene levels were below the level of the control except for 1500 ppm NaCl.
