Abstract:
Two hundred and seventy-two tomato breeding lines and cvs (processing and fresh market types) were evaluated in 1 to 54 observational and/or replicated trials, In 1 to 3 plantings (summer, fall and winter), In 1 to 3 years (1980, 1981 and 1982), at 1 to 11 locations in Egypt (Assult, Dokki, Nubaria, Fayoum, Giza, Ismallia, Kaha, Kanatir, Khattara, Menia, and Sabahia), using 1 to 3 planting systems (single plants 30 cm apart, single plants 10 cm apart and clumps of 3 plants 30 cm apart).
The following 22 outstanding, widely-adapted cvs were recommended for use in Egyptian agriculture: processing true-breeding cvs of the blocky, firm fruited type: E6203, E9209, NCX3032, Peelmech, Peto 86, Peto 95, Peto 96, Peto 98, UC 82, UC 97–3, UC 99 M-3, UC 204–9 and UC 211–58; processing cvs of the elongated type: Castlong; processing hybrid cvs of the blocky, firm fruited type: Castlex 1017 and GS 30; dual purpose true-breeding cvs of the VF 145 type: Castlemor Improved and VF 145-B-7879; fresh market, nematode-resistant true breeding cvs: VFN 8 and VFN Bush; and fresh market, nematode-resistant hybrids: Royal Flush and Valley Pride.
Additionally, fresh market cv Pakmor B was recommended for use in Menia and Nubaria and preliminary recommendation was given to the processing, true-breeding cv Castlerock and to Alexandria University fresh market, nematode resistant hybrids Alex 61 and Alex 63 (8, 20, 21).
