EFFECT OF HERBICIDES ON YIELD AND FRUIT QUALITY OF TOMATO |

| Abstract:
An experiment was conducted with the herbicides treflan (trifluralin), tillam (pebulate) and sencor (metribuzin) each at three rates compared with cultivation using the tomato cultivar Early Pack at Shambat, Sudan. Treflan at the rate of 3.6 l/ha (product) was the most effective treatment in reducing weed population but significantly reduced yield compared to hand cultivation. Sencor at 1.08 kg/ha resulted in the highest yield of all treatments. The untreated check gave the lowest yield, the highest percent of fruits with sunscald and cracking but no blossom - end rot. No significant differences were found between treatments with regard to either TSS (total soluble solids) or pH of the fruit juice. Significantly highest ascorbic acid content of fruit juice was obtained with treflan at 2.4 l/ha and lowest with the untreated check. Titratable acidity was most reduced by treflan at the same rate. Treflan at 4.8 1/ha resulted in the highest titratable acidity but the lowest TSS/acid ratio, whereas the highest TSS/acid ratio was obtained with sencor at the rate of 1.08 kg/ha. | |
