ISHS Acta Horticulturae 190: Symposium on Tomato Production on Arid Land

COMPARISON BETWEEN THREE TOMATO LINES (RIN RIN, RIN rin and rin rin) IN ACC CONTENT, LOSS IN FIRMNESS AND LOSS IN WEIGHT *)

Authors:   M.A. Atta Aly, A.S. Beltagy, G.E. Hobson
Abstract:
ACC content, loss in firmness and loss in weight were determined in three lines of tomato namely, Ailsa Craig (RIN RIN), 1977A (RIN rin) and the mutant (rin rin). A significant increase in ACC contents were observed for the normally ripen (RIN RIN) over both (RIN rin) and (rin rin). An increase in ACC levels were observed at the early stages of development in the outdoors grown fruits in comparison with the heated indoors. There were significant differences between the normally ripen and the mutant in loss in firmness and loss in weight. The introduction of the mutant allele decreased ACC level, loss in firmness and loss in weight. Results were discussed in relation to the possible role of ACC and ethylene in fruit growth and development.
