Abstract:
A tomato variety (EC 104,395) reported to be tolerant to the Tomato Leaf Curl Virus was imported from India and tested in Sudan under local conditions.
It was grown at three locations around Khartoum, and its performance was compared with two common local cultivars (Ace and Strain B). To test the effect of insecticide applications against the vector Bemisia tabaci, the three cultivars were treated at 10-day intervals either with high volume sprays of 0,03% Endosulfan or 0,02% Omethoate, or by an Electrodyne treatment with 6% Cypermethrine.
All insecticide treatments reduced considerably the number of diseased plants but increased yields only insignificantly.
At all three locations tested, the imported variety EC 104,395 showed the lowest incidence of the virus disease and gave the highest yields.
The fruits matured about one month earlier than the comparison cultivars, but because of its small fruit size and hard skin this tomato does not meet local consumer demands.
