ISHS Acta Horticulturae 189: I International Symposium of the Research and Cultivation of Roses

ROOT GRAFTING AND SCREENING SUPER CANINA ROOTSTOCKS

Author:   P.A. van de Pol
Abstract:
A project was started to select the best seedlings of Rosa canina, for use as a rootstock. Grafted bushes of superior quality are selected in commercial greenhouses. A technique of root grafting was developed so that pieces of roots of selected plants can be grafted and clones can be made the year around. By comparing these various clones it is hoped that rootstocks of superior quality ("super caninas") can be selected. An attractive aspect of this project is that rootstocks can be selected under the final growing conditions i.e. in greenhouses with a grafted cultivar.

Factors influencing the root grafting technique were investigated. Root segments of a diameter ranging from 3 to 8 mm proved to be generally successful. Applied auxin accelerated root formation.

Comparison of stentlings and root grafting indicated that the development of the graft union is similar, showing 75% of xylem vessel connection within a period of 10 days.
