ALTERNARIA BRASSICICOLA INCITED LEAF SPOT OF OIL-SEED BRASSICAS OF KALYANI AND ITS CONTROL

Author:   K.R. Samaddar
Abstract:
Growth and sporulation of A. brassicicola in culture were increasingly inhibited with increase in water stress conditions. Optimum germination of the conidia of the pathogen occurred at 25 to 30°C, at pH 6 to 8, and at RH of 99 to 100%. Germination of conidia was inhibited with decrease in water potential of the germination fluid. Allylisothiocyanate, the glucosinolate hydrolysis product of mustard seeds inhibited the germination and germ tube growth of conidia of nonpathogens of oilseed brassicas, but not of A. brassicicola. Hypae and conidia of the pathogen showed poor survival ability in natural soil and were lysed within 15 and 30 days respectively. Amendment of soil with nutrients caused delay in mycolysis of the pathogen in soil.

Seeds of yellow sarson and brown sarson carry A. brassicicola and treatment of seeds with ED50 doses of blitox, copper sulphate, ziride, and dithane M-45 eradicated the pathogen from the seeds. A total of 18 species of fungi were isolated from the phylloplane of mustard including A. brassicicola. Leaf surface saprophytes Cladosporium cladosporoides, Penicillium variable and P.sp. isolate B-2 were inhibitory to A. brasicicola in vitro.
