ISHS Acta Horticulturae 188: V International Symposium on Medicinal, Aromatic and Spice Plants

THE EFFECT OF N, P AND K DEFICIENCY ON TISSUE DIFFERENTIATION AND DIOSGENIN CONTENT IN TRIGONELLA FOENUM-GRAECUM LINN.

Authors:   C. Bhaumik, P. P.C. Datta
Abstract:
The object was to observe the changes, if any, brought about by nutritional factors, on the biodifferentiation of diosgenin Trigonella foenum-graecum L. Estimation of diosgenin in seedlings grown in complete Knop's normal culture mixture (control) and the same without nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus salts, followed soxhleting the seedling powders with petroleum ether. Anatomically, roots grown in -P and -K medium differed markedly in the shape and size of cells of cortex, epidermis and endodermis and in vessel frequency from others. Absence of P helped diosgenin synthesis while the presence of N and K were essential.
