| Abstract:
Eastern Himalayan region of India accomodates a fairly large number of medicinal plants; some of which have been commercially exploited. Amongst these, species of Cinchona, Ipecac, Dioscorea, Rauvolfia and Catharanthus deserve particular mention. The agrotechnology of these plants has been successfully worked out by researchers and planters of the region. Some other economically important species like Solanum, Costus, Digitalis and Mentha are also gradually coming into plantation - existence by intensive research studies. The local people like Nepalese, Lepchas, Tibetans, Sikkimese also use a large number of wildly growing herbs and shrubs from time immemorial, a mention of which has also been made in the paper. | |
