ISHS Acta Horticulturae 188: V International Symposium on Medicinal, Aromatic and Spice Plants

ALKALOID QUANTITY OF SOME APOCYNACEOUS LEAF DRUGS IN RELATION TO SEASONS

Authors:   S. Sen, P. P.C. Datta
Abstract:
The standardization of a drug should include determination of harvesting time for a plant material, versus the quantity of secondary metabolites changes in plants in different seasons. We followed I.P. methods for extraction of total alkaloids. TLC spectrophotometry or GLC techniques gave the quantitative information of some individual important alkaloids. In E coronaria and R serpentina the total alkaloids as well as some individual alkaloid changed much in different seasons, while in Crosea leaf individual alkaloids differed much according to season. The experimental results clearly suggested definite changes in different seasons, which suggested the necessity of selecting a proper season and favourable environment (e.g. day length, temperature, rainfall etc.) for harvesting.
