Abstract:
The idea to grow sugar beets from transplants was first used on a large acreage in Japan.
In 1973 about 80 % of the total acreage on the Hokkaido Island was transplanted with paperpots.
Field tests were bet up by the Department of Agricultural Engineering of the University of Bonn in 1974 to 1976 to obtain practical data on yield increase, the mechanization system used and the effect of nematode infected fields: In 1974 and 1975 the yield of sugar was increased by 21 and 23 % respectively as a result of the higher mass yield.
On nematode infected fields the yield of sugar was increased by 74 %, with a mass increase of 66 %. The standard for comparison was the conventional direct seeded crop.
All plants in the research plots were raised in paperpots under plastic covers.
