A BUCKET PLANTER FOR SEEDING THROUGH MULCH

Author:   K.-H. Kromer
Abstract:
Mulch affects all the growing factor and helps to keep the soil furtile and to prevent soil erosion. The effect of organic mulch (plant residue, manure, compost etc.) and synthetic mulch (bitumen emulsion, paper, plastic film etc.) is different. There is a wide range of literature available, especially for the widely used plastic mulch. Every mulch interferes with standard direct seeding and transplanting practices. Therefore new seeding technics have to be developed.

After evaluating the different direct seeding technics the bucket punch seeding system was selected. Based on the previous work of SHAW et al. and the experiences with commercial machines of HOLLAND TRANSPLANTER, HUARD and CADAMA, a single bucket wheel was designed and tested for seeding through synthetic and organic mulch.

The research results of direct seeded corn and cucumbers are discussed. The work continues with single and dual bucket wheels for direct seeding of corn through organic mulch.
