LENGTHENING OF THE PLANT RAISING STAGE

Authors:   E.A. van Os, A.T.M. Hendrix
Abstract:
In the period just after planting of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers or aubergines the utilization of space of the greenhouse is not very big. Research is done to the possibilities of placing bigger plants as normal in the greenhouse by lengthening the plant raising stage. There are two possibilities:
  1. Advancing the date of sowing; bigger plants are placed in the greenhouse at the normal planting date.
  2. Delaying the date of planting; plants are sown at the normal planting date but placed in the greenhouse at a later date.

The consequences of applying method A or B are technical as well as economical. Placing, supporting and transporting of the plants, the costs of extra labour, materials and fuel were amongst others points of research. Method A leads to a higher profit as normal, while method B is only attractive when growing an extra crop in the temporary free space.
