ISHS Acta Horticulturae 187: I International Symposium on Mechanization of Vegetable Production

ROBOTIC APPLICATIONS IN AGRICULTURE

Author:   G.W. Isaacs
Abstract:
Some potential applications for robotics in agricultural production and processing are reviewed in their current state of development in various countries of the world. Applications vary widely, including tree fruit harvesting, transplant handling, sheep shearing, and meat cutting.

Robotics is expected to increase the scope of possible mechanization for agricultural operations. Labor requirements will be reduced for activities not adaptable today to continuous machines.

A wide variety of robotic manipulators are available for industrial operations. Research and development for agricultural operations will center around the development of sensors and control software. Increased attention to research in basic physical properties of agricultural products will be needed as a basis for sensor development.
