ISHS Acta Horticulturae 187: I International Symposium on Mechanization of Vegetable Production

MECHANIZATION OF LETTUCE GROWING IN A SOILLESS CULTURE SYSTEM

Authors:   E.A. van Os, J.C.J. Kuiken
Abstract:
To grow lettuce in a soilles culture system traditional machines and methods of planting and harvesting are not feasible.

The system consists of NFT troughs covered with lids in which holes are pierced to accept the blocks with plants. Lids are rolled out by the planting machine. At harvesting time lids are pulled to the main-path where lettuceheads and roots are separated by a cutting mechanism, while at the same time the lids are wound on a drum ready for use in the planting machine. The use of the machines in practice will be shown on film.
